Travel photo of the day: African elephants crossing a river

Mother and baby at Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa.

Ted Alan Stedman of Denver, Colo., shot this photo of two elephants in October 2010 at the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa.

"The reserve borders the world-renowned Kruger National Park, considered one of the best 'Big Five' parks in Africa," Stedman tells TODAY Travel. "Sabi Sand has year-round water, and that makes game encounters very good since water is scarce here."

Stedman says he photographed the mother and baby elephant while they were crossing the Sand River — while a pride of lions were nearby.

Along with elephants, the game reserve is home to lions, rhinos, leopards and Cape buffalo, Stedman said. "The chances to see all of them on a single day are excellent here. There are also giraffes, hyenas, wildebeest, zebra, Thompson’s gazelles, and on and on."
